Vortex staircase to the sky could buy more time to fix climate disruption; total cost less than $300 million / year
Cloud seeding / brightening and aerosol production using seawater could work. An aerosol or particle is required to nucleate water vapour to form clouds. https://lnkd.in/eCVC_MRf The process could be modified to produce aerosol rings, which would create a vortex staircase to reach higher altitudes. This would be combined with Prof Salter’s lower-altitude cloud brightening.
As opposed to just using seawater, several addatives could be included, such as organically chelated ferric and DMS dimethyl sulphide. The ferric will help to deal with atmospheric methane, and when it falls back to the ocean, it will improve the growth of phytoplankton and carbon fixation. The phytoplankton would also help to reinforce the SML (surface microlayer) and reduce the rate of water evaporation. The DMS aids in cloud formation and reflection of energy back into space. If we increase cloud formation by 10% and Earths reflectivity by 0.5%, we restore the conditions back to cloud cover of the 1970’s. https://lnkd.in/epb4j49w The process could also help to freeze the Arctic, stop ice melt, reduce hurricane energy, and prevent the failure of AMOC.
I would also add an oil (C15-C20) and surfactants; this will help to mimic biogenic Omega 3 aerosols, and when they return to the ocean, it could reinforce the SML and reduce the rate of evaporation.
This is geoengineering, but it is also biomimicry on a global scale. The process is not doing anything that isn’t already happening. Pollution and ecosystem destruction have destroyed more than 50% to 80% of all life on Earth ( https://lnkd.in/ev6_2cXN ), but with intervention and support, we could perhaps buy some time to restore the natural process balance.
To have a sustainable solution, in order of priority, we still have to.
1. Eliminate lipohillic toxic chemical pollution, partially combusted carbon and microplastics
2. Ocean acidification and alkalinity dosing, https://lnkd.in/ekgnX7wz
3. Restore and regenerate terrestrial and marine ecosystems
4. Reduce carbon and methane production.
