Carbon dioxide is irrelevant

CARBON DIOXIDE is of minor importance…….
We have climate disruption all wrong….

Five years ago, we crossed the pH ocean acidification boundary; we have lost over 50% of marine life since 1970, and 90% since 1900. The oceans will destroy themselves in 10 to 20 years at the current rate of decline of 2% year on year.

Planetary boundaries are real, and the consequences represent an existential threat to over 90% of humanity, but they are ignored.

Given the behaviour of governments, organisations, and most people, there is no way we are going to be able to stop the almost total destruction of life on earth and catastrophic climate change. Indeed, climate change will be the least of our problems. Everything will appear normal until the exponential collapse of systems throws the world into chaos.

We have gone way beyond scaremongering; there is almost no point debating the issues any more when internet influencers have more authority than scientists. We either take a precautionary approach and fix the system, or the life support system of the planet fails. I fear the most likely consequence is that we will simply catalogue our own destruction.

However, there is a way out of this mess; 80% of the world’s wastewater is discharged with effectively zero treatment. The same can be said for most atmospheric pollution. We need to eliminate pollution in all its forms, especially toxic and toxic-forever chemicals, plastic and partially combusted carbon. We need to regenerate nature and ecosystems, both terrestrial and especially marine. Ocean acidification will be a challenge, but it must be reversed.

Carbon dioxide is of minor importance (read the recent report in Nature: https://lnkd.in/eFBmqD_X) and. https://lnkd.in/e3uCaZZd. We must focus on restoring the life support system of the planet. We are not going to be able to stop climate change, but it should be possible to stop climate disruption and make the world a better place.
