The Evil Twin of Climate Change, just got teeth
For nearly 20 years we have been saying that while atmospheric carbon dioxide mitigation is important, it is only a minor greenhouse gas and that it will be impossible to stop climate disruption if it is our only focus. The real existential threat to life on Earth is directly connected to the survival of marine life. Terrestrial ecosystems are important, but we are now in imminent danger of losing marine life in the world’s oceans. More than 50% is gone, and the remaining 50% is under threat.
Academic institutes and laboratories have a duty of care to properly inform decision-makers; we have been seriously let down.
The Stockholm Resilience Centre has continued to report that we are in the green zone and that ocean acidification boundaries have not been crossed. They have failed to take into account many obvious facts, such as the aragonite saturation index at high latitudes and cascade chemical reactions.

In our communications with Plymouth Marine Laboratory in June 2021, we were shocked that they did not think the oceans were under threat from plastic or ocean acidification. I have now gone public with the reports;

In spite of complacency from the academic institutes and even antagonistic attacks on www.goesfoundation.com we have continued with our work. I gave one of the first presentations at COP26 on the importance of the oceans

The GOES Foundation ran one of the largest citizen science projects in the world to monitor oceanic plankton productivity and microplastic pollution. We then linked the results to climate disruption

We were again confronted by the Plymouth Marine Lab to debunk our report; https://lnkd.in/e2RGVzHu. We have now been proved right!!!
The Marine Laboratory now agrees that we have crossed the ocean acidification boundary and that they acknowledge the loss of marine life.

,However, the solution is NOT !!!! and I repeat, NOT !!! just about atmospheric carbon dioxide mitigation as reported by the Marine Lab; the solution are discussed on Linkedin https://lnkd.in/ePvB5psT and in our bioclimatic report.
We need to eliminate pollution in all its forms, especially microplastics, toxic forever lipophilic chemicals, and black carbon; stop industrial fishing; and regenerate ecosystems. Carbon dioxide mitigation should continue, but we must buffer the oceans by the addition of calcium alkalinity.
It is important to understand that there are solutions, and the oceans can recover super fast, but if we do nothing, then there is no hope.

This is a call to action; we need to deal with the issues now, not in 5 or even 10 years, because by then it will be too late. Throw the Oceans a Lifeline; https://lnkd.in/emVfjjKy
